BETS
- There looks to be a tremendous showdown on tap at TD Garden in Boston this evening between the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins, with the marquee matchup being Linus Ullmark v. Jake Oettinger. Ullmark has been outstanding for the Bruins this season, stopping 130 of the 140 shots he’s faced. As impressive as the Swede has been for the B’s, Oettinger has been equally as good – if not better – for the Stars. The 23-year-old netminder has stopped an improbable 95.9% of the 121 shots he’s faced this season, suggesting his otherworldly postseason series against the Flames in the spring may have been a precursor of things to come. It’s also a homecoming of sorts (although he was born in Minnesota), as he was a three-year member of the Boston University Terriers hockey team. Returning to Boston, I’m expecting Oettinger and this quality Stars team to show up and make amends for their 6-3 loss last night in Ottawa.
- Marc-Andre Fleury is a first-ballot Hall of Famer and likely will go down as one of the ten-to-fifteen greatest goaltenders in National Hockey League history based on his accomplishments, but let’s call a spade a spade – the 37-year-old has been dreadful this season. In four appearances Fleury has stopped just 84.7% of the shots he’s faced (118 total), ranking him 59th of 65 goalies that have made an appearance this year. Maybe taking on a team like the Canadiens tonight in Montreal will be just what the doctor ordered for the veteran, but strictly speaking in terms of pricing, this line is way off. Minnesota has a decided edge in nearly every facet of play entering tonight’s game, but the disastrous goalkeeping they’ve received this season coupled with Jake Allen‘s solid play in the crease for the Habs leads me to backing Les Habitants at Bell Centre.
- Columbus fans have reason to get excited over the next few years given recent additions like Johnny Gaudreau and Erik Gudbranson combined with players like Boone Jenner and Gustav Nyquist, but they’re still a bottom-third team for the time being. The good news for Blue Jackets fans this evening is that the woeful Arizona Coyotes come to town, a team that a) can’t score and b) allows a million goals. I wouldn’t expect the highest quality in tonight’s matchup, but goals should be readily available for two teams that struggle in 5-on-5 scenarios and allow copious amounts of quality scoring opportunities to their opposition. It may not be a good game, but it’ll be an entertaining game.
- Pittsburgh enters tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames on the heels of a 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers last night, a result that’s sure to make some say the Pens aren’t up to the level of some of the faster teams in the Western Conference. Even though Pittsburgh is the second-oldest team in the National Hockey League, I’m not ready to go that far. The Pens had been firing on all cylinders this season prior to last night’s loss, and one poor effort shouldn’t cloud people’s judgement. The Pens and Flames match up very evenly (although Calgary is far better on the PK), and Jacob Markstrom hasn’t looked particularly strong to this point (.882 save percentage against eighty-five shots). Look for Pittsburgh’s vets (Crosby, Malkin, Carter, Letang, Petry, etc.) to bounce back following a subpar effort last night. I could also see this game going under, as Casey DeSmith is more than capable in the backup role and Markstrom, despite not showing his ‘A’ game to this point, can quiet any opponent.
- Both Buffalo and Seattle have been pleasant surprises during the first few weeks of the season, as each team has played above their heads given preseason expectations. The Sabres have gotten slightly lucky given their number of expected goals against versus their actual goals against (11.7 v. 6 via hockey-reference.com), while the Kraken have been slightly unlucky given this same comparison (11.1 v. 14). While each team has scored with relative ease this season, I’m expecting a bit of a regression to the mean both offensively and defensively tonight, with UNDER 6.5 total goals appealing at +105.
