Mark Recchi’s busy summer will end with him behind an NHL bench.

Having already been promoted by the Penguins once this summer and elected to the NHL Hall of Fame, the former Bruin has been promoted again -- this time being named an assistant coach on Mike Sullivan’s staff in Pittsburgh.

The retired right wing had served as the Penguins’ player development coach for the last three seasons and was promoted to director of player development last month. The team moved him up to the NHL staff Tuesday after Rick Tocchet left to become Arizona’s head coach.

As a player, Recchi had three different stints with the Penguins, most notably spending the first five seasons of his career with the organization from 1988 to 1992. He returned to the team for the 2005-06 season, and after being dealt to the Hurricanes at the trade deadline and winning the Stanley Cup with Carolina, he again returned to the Penguins in free agency that summer.

Recchi finished his playing career in Boston, winning his third career Stanley Cup championship with the team in 2011. He spent parts of three seasons in Boston, scoring 42 regular-season goals and adding 14 more over three postseasons.
