Mannix: Celtics need elite scorers like Carmelo Anthony

Share

The Knicks are reportedly in talks with the Celtics and a few other teams regarding Carmelo Anthony, but is the 11-time NBA All-Star the right fit in Boston?

The Celtics have had two major problems of late: defense and rebounding.

Unfortunately, Anthony's defense isn't something that's usually put in a positive light.

Melo is averaging 6.1rebounds per game, ranking 26th in the NBA among all forwards -- higher than any Celtics forward. However, he's outside of the top-100 forwards in rebounds per 48 minutes (8.7). When it comes to his work on the glass, what you see is what you get.

Anthony gives the Celtics another late-game shooting option, but he takes 18.5 shots a game -- eighth most in the NBA. As much as he'd provide a fourth-quarter option, someone's going to have to sacrifice shots on a nightly basis.
