The Red Sox officially added outfielder Andrew Benintendi and left-handed reliever Fernando Abad to the active roster before their game Tuesday night in Seattle and designated lefty reliever Tommy Layne and utility man Michael Martinez for assignment.

Abad, 30, was acquired Monday prior to the 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins for minor league right-handed reliever Pat Light. Benintendi, 22, one of the Red Sox top prospects, has been called up from Double-A Portland.

Manager John Farrell said the left-handed hitting Benintendi wouldn’t start tonight against Mariners’ left-hander Wade LeBlanc but will likely start in left field on Wednesday night against right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma.

Martinez, 33, was acquired earlier this month in a trade with the Cleveland Indians. He went 1-for-6 in four games. Layne, 31, spent the past three seasons with the Red Sox. He was 1-2, 3.77 ERA with a 1.430 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 34 games (28 2/3 innings) this season.

The designation for assignment gives the team 10 days to trade, release or have the players accept a minor league assignment.
