The Red Sox exercised Clay Buchholz’ $13.5 million option for the 2017 season, the team announced Thursday.

Buchholz, 32, went 8-10 with a 4.78 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 139 1/3 innings this season for the Red Sox. He started 21 games and made 16 appearances in relief.

The right-hander has spent 10 full seasons with the Sox since making his debut in 2007. He’s had an up-and-down career in Boston, finishing with ERAs higher than 4.5 in two of the last three seasons and three of the last five.

While Buchholz will be back, catcher Ryan Hanigan won’t be. The team declined its 2017 option on Hanigan, making him a free agent.

As a formality, David Ortiz’ option for 2017 was exercised, though Ortiz intends to retire this offseason. In a press release announcing Thursday’s moves, the team clarified that Ortiz’ plan remains to retire.

Additionally, Pablo Sandoval, Blake Swihart, Carson Smith, Brandon Workman and Josh Rutledge were reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, with Rutledge being outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket.
