Red Sox

BOSTON - Despite the big names in this year's Red Sox lineup, the Sox have struggled at the plate.

The Sox come into Tuesday's game ranked tied for 21st in runs with 151, which is also last in the AL East. The Sox are also batting .230 (28th in MLB) as a team with 143 RBI (21st in MLB).

In their seven-game trip out west, they scored five ones just one time - and it took them 11 innings to do it.

But on Tuesday, John Farrell's lineup didn't have any big changes to it.

Here it is again:

Betts, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Ramirez, LF
Sandoval, 3B
Napoli, 1B
Nava, RF
Bogaerts, SS
Swihart, C

Before Tuesday's game, Farrell explained why - as for now, anyways - things remain the same.

"If it centered around one or two spots in the order, you might say, 'Let's look to slide Vic in the two hole like we did in Seattle, or move him up ahead of a couple guys in that bottom or middle third.' We're in a situation where to me I think it's just important for each and every guy in our lineup to do his job. To what his career track record has shown. Not to do more. To say that a lineup shakeup would jump-start us all, that's kind of having a little bit of a crystal ball. We have the capability here. And I'm not saying there won't be changes, whether that's to the lineup or whether that's to our position player group. Coming off the road trip I thought, OK, let's get through the off day still maintain some stability, but always with an eye to what changes might help us."

The Belichickian "do your job" mantra. Perhaps that's a little tribute to the Patriots who are going through some offseason turbulence right now to say the least. Probably not, though.

The key takeaway is that Farrell is at least considering a change in the future. Just as Farrell wanted to get 6-8 turns through the rotation, he told the Providence Journal that when it comes to hitters, the 100-at bat mark is enough.

"When they get to that level and above you're starting to get at least a good number of at-bats to see them in different situations," Farrell said. "We're past that with a number of guys, and like I said the best way to answer any question about our offense is that there's history on the side of each individual. We need to get back to and continue to do what their individual strengths are. That's including trusting one another in those RBI situations. Using all field. And games in which we've done that, that's when we've been at our best."

The point Farrell is making is that the difference between last season's struggles on offense and this season's is that this season there's reason to believe they'll snap out of it.

But the clock certainly is ticking.
