Baseball players aren’t expected to walk around with perfect bodies. But they are expected to at least be in shape in order to perform at the highest of levels.

There are, however, exceptions. Some players have had trouble keeping the weight off during their careers. We take a look at the players who carried around a lot of weight under their Red Sox uniforms.

Listed weight: 200 pounds
Heaviest weight guess: 260 pounds

George Scott is a real trail blazer (trail mix blazer?) when it comes to fat Red Sox players.

And the Sox even fat-shamed him in a sense during the 1967 season, when he was benched for three games because he couldn’t make his weight.

Scott peaked at around 260 pounds, or the average McDonald’s customer’s weight today, in the mid- to late 1970s. But that’s just it: 260 pounds in the '70s equals about 320 pounds today. That’s just basic inflation.

But Scott made it work. He was a three-time All-Star and an exceptional first-baseman who won eight Gold Gloves -- three with the Sox and the rest with the Brewers.

Scott hit a lot of home runs -- 271 -- and he called them "taters". It’s funny because he was fat.

Now, Roger Clemens was a large human being. Fat might be a bit much but he definitely packed on the pounds over the years, particularly during his final seasons with the Red Sox. To be fair, though, he really didn’t start bulking up -- in every sense of the word -- until after his time in Boston.

Although the added girth seemed to hinder him during his final days as a Red Sock (40-39 in his last four seasons in Boston), the extra, ah, bulk that he gained in Toronto and beyond seemed to shoot him in the stratosphere. He went 162-73 as a Blue Jay, Yankee and Astro over the last 11 years of his career and wound up being an 11-time All-Star and a seven-time Cy Young Award winner who rarely allowed runs, struck out a ton of dudes, yadda, yadda, yadda you get it. The guy could pitch . . . no matter how big he was.

Clemens was endorsed by Coca-Cola and eventually moved home to Texas, where the chicken-fried steak and beef brisket flowed like wine. So it was only a matter of time before the weight caught up to him.

The “Hit Dog”, as he was called wasn’t shy, about pounding a hot dog or seven.

Kidding. To be fair, I have no idea what Vaughn’s diet consisted of . . . other than right-handed pitchers! OH!

Vaughn was a three-time All-Star and kept things at least somewhat interesting in the '90s when it wasn’t the most fun time to be a Red Sox fan. Okay, it was borderline miserable.

Vaughn’s weight really came back to bite him after his time in Boston. In 1999 he slipped on some dugout stairs in his first game as an Angel and badly sprained his ankle. That poor, poor, ankle.

Heaviest weight guess: 290 pounds

El Guapo! Rich Garces was a hefty, hefty human and seems like the type of guy that would be the first one to tell you that, and with a big smile on his face.

“El Guapo” translates into “the handsome one” and, honestly, it’s up there with some of the best nicknames in Red Sox history.

He had a 10-year career, seven with the Red Sox. And it's in Boston where he became a fan favorite.

A few years later he signed with the Nashua Pride of the Can-Am League. And get this: They had a bobble BELLY giveaway. That’ right, the head didn’t move, but the belly jiggled. If that doesn’t say fat, I don’t know what does.

Listen, Wells played for a long, long time. Twenty-one years. You can’t play that long if you’re severely overweight -- even if it’s just baseball. And he was a good pitcher, too. Wells is a victim of his own longevity. Sure, he was 187 pounds at one point. Probably around sixth grade. But when you’re standing on a mound for over 20 years, it’s easy to see the transformation from somewhat in shape to completely out of shape. That’s a lot of sitting around and a lot of postgame meals.

“Boomer” only played two seasons with the Sox, one of nine teams he played for. He had an okay season in 2005 with Boston, finishing 15-7 with a 4.45 ERA. Hey, they got 30 starts out of him.

Bartolo Colon -- a.k.a Big Sexy, a.k.a -- El Gato is truly a physical specimen. We’re talking about a guy who has essentially defied the laws of baseball and science. He’s 42 years old, in his 19th season, and is somehow is still going after he was left for dead like six years ago.

Sure, it took a dab or testosterone here, and a pinch of stem-cell there, but hey.

And this isn’t a guy who has EVER been in shape. He’s been heavy pretty much the whole way through his career since breaking into the Majors in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians.

Colon went seven seasons between All-Star games, 2005 to 2013, and is now on a Mets pitching staff considered to be the best in Major League Baseball.

His most forgettable season probably came in Boston, where he started just seven games in 2008 before bolting to the Dominican before the season ended. Two years later he was out of the league. Three seasons after that he was an All-Star.

Teammates seem to love him, and there sure is a lot to love.

Heaviest weight guess: 240 pounds

Curt Schilling was instrumental in bringing a World Series championship to Boston in 2004 and then helped win another in 2007, so like David Ortiz, this guy can be as heavy as he wants to be. Big Schill was carrying around some extra weight for much of his career, but it didn't stop him from being effective over his 20 years in the big leagues.

He was an All-Star with the Sox in 2004 at the age of 37, and finished second in the Cy Young voting that season.

Count me as one who thinks his big-game performances should earn him a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame, too.

Schilling has lost a lot of weight since retiring from the game due to the treatments he underwent while battling mouth cancer.

Heaviest weight guess: 260 pounds

Big Papi is the big exception on this list. As Ortiz has aged, he’s gotten into better shape. He’s by no means “fat”. He's trimmed down some in the last few years, a testament to the hard work he puts in the back end of his career to remain at the top of his game.

When Ortiz first came to Boston in 2003 he was probably a bit overweight, but nobody was complaining about that when he smashed 31 home runs in his first season and continued to climb up to 54 through the 2006 season.

All that said, Ortiz is a big fella and always will be. This is supposed to be his last season in the Majors, but if he has another big season, I could see him giving it a second thought.

Ah, Pablo Sandoval. The reason behind this gallery. The Red Sox knew they were getting a fat player when they signed Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million contract last offseason.

But they probably didn’t know they were getting the Cookie Monster. Sandoval is the Sultan of Salami, the King of Kabobs, the President of Parmesan, the Prime Minister of Pecan Pie . . . you get the idea.

He showed up to camp this season overweight, and because of it he lost his job.

The “Ferrari” that his agent compared him to is looking more like one of those Brinks trucks - a clunker carrying around a bunch of money, but of no use to anybody else.

The San Diego Padres are reportedly intersted in his services. If that's the case, Sandoval better get serious about that beach body.
