Red Sox call up lefty Henry Owens from Pawtucket

The Red Sox have recalled left-hander Henry Owens from Triple-A Pawtucket.

With Clay Buchholz back in the rotation and Steven Wright uncertain if he’ll pitch again this season, the Red Sox took advantage of the expanded rosters in September to bring up Owens, who struggled in his last appearance for Boston - an emergency start in Detroit in place of Wright on Aug. 21 (five innings, eight runs, six hits, two homers in a 10-5 loss).

Owens had a 7.79 ERA and 2.13 WHIP in four major league starts this season. He struggled with his control, with more walks (18) than strikeouts (15) and will likely be used as an emergency starter or long man out of the bullpen. He was 10-7 at Pawtucket, with a 3.92 ERA, 1.366 WHIP, 135 strikeouts and 81 walks in 137 2/3 innings.
