Red Sox put LHP Ross (flu) on DL, call up IF Marrero

BOSTON -- And by the afternoon on a day the Red Sox had no game, their third roster move was known.

Robbie Ross Jr.'s bout with the flu was debilitating enough that the Red Sox decided to put him on the 10-day disabled list. Influenza is the listed ailment.

Infielder Deven Marrero is to join the team instead.

That gives the Red Sox a more standard seven relievers instead of the eight they carried to start the year. Part of the thinking there could be that with Mookie Betts battling the flu as well, the bench is short.

The list of guys joining the team to start a four-game series with the Tigers: Marrero, infielder Marco Hernandez and reliever Noe Ramirez.

The guys going out: Ross, shortstop Xander Bogaerts (bereavement, can return Monday), Matt Barnes (bereavement, can return Sunday).

Ross' placement on the DL is retroactive to April 3.
