Red Sox send Travis back to Pawtucket; Pedroia returns to lineup

With Dustin Pedroia coming off the disabled list and returning to the Red Sox lineup tonight, a roster move needed to be made to make room for him. So, first baseman Sam Travis has been optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The right-handed-hitting Travis, 23, went 8-for-19 (.471) in his six-game audition as a platoon first baseman with left-handed-hitting Mitch Moreland and pinch-hitter. Pedroia, who injured his wrist in a first-base collision with Jose Abreu on Memorial Day in Chicago, will come off the 10-game disabled list and start at second and bat second tonight as the Red Sox open a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.

More to come...
