Source: Brian Johnson ‘fine', should make start for Red Sox this week

NEW YORK — Lefty Brian Johnson's hamstring should be fine, a baseball source said Monday, and the left-hander is likely to make a start for the Red Sox later this week in place of Eduardo Rodriguez.

Johnson had a hamstring cramp last week, limiting his last outing with Triple-A Pawtucket to 1 2/3 innings. Johnson's last major-league start was a complete-game shutout against the Mariners on May 27.

Whether or not Rodriguez misses extended time, Johnson's an important piece for the Red Sox as the team's sixth starter. They haven't had any reliability when it comes to rotation depth this year, and Johnson's success (and health) could impact their trade needs.

At Triple-A, Johnson has a 2.72 ERA. In his complete-game performance, he struck out eight, allowed five hits and walked none.

Rodriguez on Monday visited Dr. James Andrews for an examination of a subluxation of his right knee. An update wasn't available from the team as of early Monday afternoon.
