Tom E. Curran's Patriots-Texans Preview/Review: Houston, we've had a problem

Tom E. Curran's Patriots-Texans Preview/Review: Houston, we've had a problem

Patriots-Texans was a one-sided rivalry headed into Sunday night's matchup at NRG Stadium. New England had won 10 of the 11 meetings, and Bill O'Brien was winless against his former employer.

But O'Brien and Houston defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel stymied the out-of-sync Patriots offense en route to a 28-22 win that wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicated.

Although we've seen Tom Brady and Co. out of sorts at other points this season, this was the first time the Patriots really paid the price for offensive stagnancy with a loss.

With the season three-quarters over, it’s fair to wonder if that will be the last time.

Tom E. Curran's Patriots-Cowboys Preview/Review: Defense does it again

Tom E. Curran's Patriots-Cowboys Preview/Review: Defense does it again

I don’t care if it was 66 degrees under crystal clear and windless skies, the Dallas Cowboys didn’t have the belly to come into Foxboro and beat the Patriots. Start there.

As was mentioned in our preview for the game, the Cowboys got fat on bad teams this year and — depleted as they are with an offense that was objectively not very good at all (their first two scoring drives went a total of 45 feet; all told their three scoring drives were 19 plays and 56 yards) — the Patriots are far from a bad team at 10-1.

I’m back on the historic defense bandwagon after this one and I’ll add an aura chaser to it because the wind and the rain and the specter of the Patriots in Foxboro had the Cowboys and Jason Garrett embracing the 13-9 loss as some kind of moral victory.

Patriots-Eagles Preview/Review: Defense and special teams carry the day

Patriots-Eagles Preview/Review: Defense and special teams carry the day

If you hadn't watched the game, Tom Brady's postgame demeanor might have been a sign that the Patriots lost to the Eagles on Sunday.

But Brady's dour mood notwithstanding, the Pats improved to 9-1 on the season with a 17-10 win, helped largely by strong performances from their defense and special teams.

While the Patriots offense struggled, the defense was back to its dominant ways, with the exception of a 95-yard TD drive from the Eagles.

So what went right and what didn't go as planned?
