Brad Marchand offers perfect explanation for wanting to fight Pierre-Luc Dubois

The Boston Bruins have each other's backs, and that's especially true of Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand.

The veteran forwards have played on the same line in Boston for nearly a decade and have tremendous on and off-ice chemistry. So, it wasn't surprising that Marchand was ready to stick up for Bergeron when Columbus Blue Jackets forward Pierre-Luc Dubois took a run at the B's center during Saturday night's game at TD Garden.

Here's a look at Marchand and Dubois nearly fighting in the first period. Both players dropped their gloves, but the linesman prevented anything from going down.

“Yeah, the refs just kinda got involved there,” Marchand told reporters after Boston's 2-1 overtime win. “He was just whacking (Bergeron), and you don’t touch Bergy like that, you know. Things happen, kind of heat of the moment, but the ref kind of just jumped in and kept us apart, that’s all it was.”

Dubois hasn't fought this season, and his last bout actually came against the Bruins in December of 2017 when he and B's defenseman Charlie McAvoy threw down. It was one of the more entertaining fights of the season for the Bruins, so from that standpoint, it's a little disappointing we didn't get to watch Marchand and Dubois settle their differences Saturday.

Still, the Bruins served the desperate Blue Jackets the real punch by denying them a second point from a game they really needed to win to help maintain a wild-card playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
