David Backes takes a skate blade to the face, leaves Bruins game vs. Coyotes

Ouch! From Paul George to Gordon Hayward and others, sports has seen more than its share of scary injuries over the years.

And you can add David Backes to that list. The Bruins winger took a skate blade from Oliver Ekman-Larsson directly to the face in the first period of the Bruins-Coyotes game on Tuesday night. Watch if you're not too squeamish.

Backes immediately left the ice under his own power and went down the tunnel for medical attention, but he's a hockey player, so of course he was back on the ice at the start of the second period. After the game, he told the Boston Globe that he had a cut on the side of his nose that required a few stitches and some ointment.

"I didn't know what happened at first with the way he came off, and you figured it was more than a high stick," Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game. "And those are tough, up around your eyes too. But he was able to play through it. I'm sure it will be sore tomorrow. A bit like our game tonight; it wasn't pretty but we got through it."

"It’s always scary when you see a teammate get a skate in the face or really anywhere," added Brad Marchand, "but you know he looks a little prettier now and he came back, he’s fine, and good to see him back out there."

It's not the first time that Backes suffered a cut from a skate blade on the ice. In March, Backes needed 18 stitches after being cut in the right thigh by Yanni Gourde's skate in Tampa.
