Don Sweeney says Bruins top prospect could debut this season

Could the Boston Bruins still be able to add reinforcements this spring now that the NHL trade deadline has come and gone?

General manager Don Sweeney said Monday that Fabian Lysell, the team's consensus top prospect, could head to either Boston or AHL Providence once his season in the Western Hockey League comes to a close.

"From a skill standpoint, talent standpoint, Fabian has a lot of things we're excited about," Sweeney said, via Conor Ryan of Boston Sports Journal.

Bruins' failure to add forward depth at trade deadline could prove costly

Lysell, Boston's first-round selection (21st overall) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, has 51 points (20 goals, 31 assists) over 43 games for the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League. The WHL regular season runs through April 17, by which point the NHL Bruins will have seven regular season games remaining.

The 19-year-old Swede is a right-shot right wing.

If Lysell were to only join Boston in time for a run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he'd be following the footsteps of Charlie McAvoy, who made his NHL debut in Game 1 of the 2017 Eastern Conference first round series between the Bruins and Ottawa Senators before becoming a mainstay the next regular season.
