Highlights from Bruins' 4-3 OT win over Hurricanes

FINAL SCORE: Bruins 4, Hurricanes 3 (OT)

IN BRIEF: The Hurricanes busted out their Hartford Whalers throwbacks, and early on this one had some old-school physical banging reminiscent of those legendary Adams Division battles a quarter-century ago. Down 2-0, the Bruins rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the third period on a Patrice Bergeron shorthanded goal, then won in overtime after Jake DeBrusk won an aggressive forecheck behind the net and fed David Krejci, who put it home with a sweet deke. With the win, Boston has now taken at least a point in 16 straight games, last losing in regulation in the month of January.

FROM JOE HAGGERTY

So much for Marcus Johansson’s impact after the trade deadline. At least for the next little while anyway. He absorbed a massive Michael Ferland hit in the first period against the side boards that crumpled him to the ice and sent him skating off doubled over in pain after he was down on the ice for a good five minutes. It looked more shoulder than concussion, based on the clean shoulder-to-shoulder nature of the hit, but either way it’s not going to be good if Johansson is out for the long term. This was the concern with Johansson as the deadline acquisition. He’s a soft, finesse and skill player that’s become injury-prone in the last few seasons and it’s tough if you’re relying on those guys.

The entire game actually had the feel of an Adams Division throwback game with the Hurricanes players decked out in the Hartford Whalers uniforms, and the B’s playing in their home white sweaters for the first time in a long time. There was plenty of physical play from both sides after the big Ferland hit on Johansson, and it culminated with David Backes dropping the gloves and throwing down with Ferland the next time he was on the ice. The Bruins responded to the physical play in kind, which is a good thing. They also responded on the scoreboard.

Sebastian Aho is a confirmed Bruins killer. He now has eight goals and 12 points in nine career games against the Black and Gold, and continues to pile up big offensive numbers every time the two teams play each other. The second goal was a breakaway where Aho was able to sneak in behind the B’s defense on a sloppy line change -- that’s just something that shouldn’t happen.
