Highlights from the Bruins' 6-5 OT win over the Sharks

Share

FINAL SCORE: Bruins 6, Sharks 5

IN BRIEF: There was no shortage of goals Monday night as the Bruins built a 3-0 first period lead only to give it up late in the third. Fortunately for them, Charlie McAvoy scored in overtime to give the Bruins a huge road victory over a hot Sharks team. Joe Thornton tallied his first hat trick in eight years while Karson Kuhlman notched his first career goal.

BOX SCORE

BRUINS RECORD: 35-17-8 (78 points), 2nd in Atlantic Division

FROM JOE HAGGERTY:

Karson Kuhlman was kind of forgettable in his NHL debut on Saturday night in Los Angeles. In his second NHL game in San Jose he scored his first NHL goal to give the Bruins a commanding lead over the Sharks. That’s some pretty big time improvement from one game to the next and perhaps a sign that Kuhlman is getting acclimated to the NHL level.

The Bruins have wanted their defensemen to get more involved in the offense all season, and it seems to be working for them on Monday night. Torey Krug scored the first one on the power play and then Zdeno Chara kicked in his fourth goal of the season. More offense from the back end is exactly the kind of secondary scoring that the Black and Gold are looking for and a big reason they’re up by a couple of goals right now. In all they had five goals scored through the 60 minutes of regulation play before things were decided in extra time, but it was the B’s defensemen that got them going early.

It is goals in four straight games for Jake DeBrusk, who put on a big celebration after the strike in what’s been a very strong game for the Bruins winger. The goal was a beautiful give-and-go after David Backes had kicked out a puck in the neutral zone, and gave DeBrusk a goal and two points along with a plus-1 rating in 12:12 of ice time. DeBrusk has a couple of shot attempts and a hit in that span of time as well.
