Report: Bruins among options for free agent Alex Goligoski

The Boston Bruins need to sign or trade for another defenseman, and there are a few players for them to target when the NHL free agent market officially opens at noon ET on Wednesday.

One of the best options for the Bruins is veteran Alex Goligoski.

Longtime Arizona hockey writer Craig Morgan of AZCoyotesInsider.com reported Tuesday evening that the Bruins are among the "most likely options" for Goligoski.

Goligoski will be 36 years old on Friday, so a short-term deal would be best if the Bruins are seriously pursuing him.

Five players Bruins should target in NHL free agency

Despite his age, Goligoski is quite durable. He's missed only 12 games over the last eight seasons and has played over 20 minutes per game for 12 consecutive years. The Bruins could really use a minutes eater like Goligoski.

Furthermore, Goligoski has experience playing both sides of the blue line, and that kind of versatility would be quite valuable to the B's.

Boston also needs more offensive production and playmaking on its blue line. Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk were the only Bruins defensemen who tallied double-digit points last season, and they play on the same pairing. Goligoski has posted 19-plus assists in 10 straight seasons. He's also got plenty of experience on the power play throughout his career.

Goligoski isn't the slam dunk top-four defenseman he was earlier in his career, but he's one of the best options and fits for the Bruins in free agency.
