Zdeno Chara is going back to where it all started.

The free agent defenseman has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the New York Islanders, the team announced Saturday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chara spent the first four seasons of his career with the Islanders before they traded him to the Ottawa Senators in 2001.

The 44-year-old defenseman played for the Washington Capitals last season. He had spent the previous 14 years as the Boston Bruins' captain and top defenseman from 2006-07 through 2019-20.

The Islanders, who beat the Bruins in a six-game second-round playoff series last season, will make one regular season trip to TD Garden in Boston on Saturday, March 26.

Chara's 1,608 games played are the second-most among active players. The 2021-22 season will be his 24th as an NHL player.
