Providence Bruins sign Tuukka Rask as veteran goalie nears NHL return

Tuukka Rask has taken the next step toward making his return to the NHL.

The Boston Bruins' AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins, announced Thursday that they have signed the veteran goaltender to a professional tryout agreement.

Rask was expected to start Friday night for the P-Bruins vs. the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, but the team's weekend games have been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Friday's game was rescheduled to April 11 and Saturday's will take place April 19.

Rask has been practicing with the Bruins for several weeks now. Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy has said a few times that Rask going to Providence to get in some games before taking the next step and returning to the NHL was a real possibility.

Should Bruins pay this reported asking price for Coyotes' Jakob Chychrun?

Cassidy also noted Tuesday that Rask "looks good" in practice.

If all goes well in Providence, it's possible Rask could join the Bruins later this month. If he does sign an NHL contract, rookie netminder Jeremy Swayman probably would need to be sent to the AHL, unless the B's want to keep three goalies on the roster.

Swayman is able to go to the AHL without needing waivers. Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark has a no-movement clause in his contract.
