Bulls-Celtics Instant Overreactions: Should Enes Kanter start more often?

Share

The Boston Celtics won their second straight game on Monday night as they defeated the Chicago Bulls, 113-101.

Jayson Tatum followed up his career-high 41-point performance on Saturday by leading all Celtics players with 21.

Here are three instant overreactions from the C's victory, which brings them to 27-11 on the year:

1. Enes Kanter should continue to start over Daniel Theis.

Verdict: Overreaction

Kanter started in place of the injured Daniel Theis on Monday night and was electrifying out the gate. He scored all 15 of his points in the first half and added a game-high nine rebounds.

Slow starts have been an issue for the Celtics all season, so it was refreshing to see Kanter prevent that from happening this time around. That being said, he should head back to the bench when Theis returns.

Kanter provides a much-needed spark off the bench with his scoring, while Theis is best suited in the starting role with his defensive ability. The lineup has worked to near perfection throughout the year, so there's no need to shake things up now. Both big men have been great in their respective roles.

2. Celtics need more out of Gordon Hayward.

Verdict: Overreaction

Remember when Kemba Walker scored only two points but made his presence felt with 11 assists vs. the Detroit Pistons last month? It was a similar kind of night for Hayward vs. the Bulls.

Hayward finished with eight points (4-for-11 shooting), all of them coming in the fourth quarter. On the plus side, he dished out a game-high eight assists and brought down six rebounds. When the shots weren't falling, Hayward made it a point to take a back seat and set his teammates up for success.

It's fair to want more scoring out of Hayward, but the 29-year-old deserves credit for finding other ways to help the team win. He was rock-solid defensively in this one as well.

3. Grant Williams is getting better and better as the season goes on.

Verdict: Not an overreaction

Williams suffered a minor shoulder injury early on in this game but battled through it to provide valuable minutes off the bench. He finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The rookie has come a long way since his first few games in a C's uniform. By no means is his game flawless, but it's encouraging to see his development on both the offensive and defensive side. Those days of Williams not being able to buy a 3-pointer are far behind us.
