Joe Johnson joining the Boston Celtics on a 10-day contract sparked plenty of excitement in and around the organization.
Johnson was drafted by the C's with the 10th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. Jayson Tatum, who was three years old when Johnson made his NBA debut, was thrilled to hear one of his favorite players growing up was going to be his teammate.
Celtics great Cedric Maxwell also was fired up about Johnson's return to Boston. He interrupted Johnson's introductory press conference on Wednesday and was prepared to give "Iso Joe" his retired No. 31 jersey.
"The real 31 is up in here!" Maxwell said."
"I asked them, 'could I take the 31 off the rafters?' Johnson replied.
"Absolutely. We pulling it down, partner," Maxwell said before giving Johnson a fist bump.
Johnson wore No. 31 during his brief time with the Celtics in 2001-02. As cool as it would be to see him wear that number again 20 years later -- especially since it has Maxwell's approval -- he'll wear No. 55 instead.
Johnson is expected to play Wednesday night vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
