Edwards looking to build off terrific outing vs. Clips

The Boston Celtics went into Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers shorthanded, as they have often been this season.

With Jaylen Brown (knee) missing his first game of the year and Marcus Smart (calf) still sidelined, the team was without two of the top-six players in their rotation. Their injury woes only worsened when Daniel Theis left the game in the first half with knee soreness and didn't return.

As a result of these absences, Boston needed someone to step up off the bench and pack a scoring punch. Carsen Edwards was able to do just that.

C's-Clippers Overreactions: Time for more Carsen Edwards

The second-year guard entered the game in the first quarter and provided a spark for the C's. Edwards had a strong shooting night, putting up 16 points while playing a career-high 30 minutes of action.

After the contest, Edwards felt good about his performance and spoke about how making his first shot helped him get into a rhythm during the contest.

"Just seeing that first shot go in is a good thing," Edwards said. "I'm trying to get in a rhythm through other ways [than just scoring]. Through getting stops, trying to get a rebound or something like that, but seeing the shot go in, it helps a lot. It was a good game for me. It was good to play. I just want to try to build off this."

If Edwards can do that, he should earn a larger role off the Celtics bench. The team could always use some extra scoring, and Edwards' scoring burst in the first half helped the Celtics set the table for a second-half comeback against the Clippers.

How exactly is Edwards planning to do build off his performance moving forward? It boils down to one thing. Playing hard.

"You can always play hard," Edwards said. "Your effort is something you can control."

Edwards' next chance to put forth a strong effort will be on Sunday against the Phoenix Suns. Coverage of the game starts at 1:30 p.m. ET with Celtics Pregame Live and tip-off at 2 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston.
