Celtics' Daniel Theis out for at least two weeks with foot injury

BOSTON – Following an MRI on his right foot, the doctors told Celtics forward Daniel Theis he would be in a walking boot for a couple of weeks – and Theis could not have been happier.

Having worked his way back from a torn meniscus injury that kept him out for several months, limping around for a couple weeks with a slightly torn fascia injury is not a big deal.

"It didn't rupture; it's a tear in the muscle," said Celtics coach Brad Stevens. "Supposedly it takes a few weeks before you can re-test it, make sure it's in good shape and move on from there."

Theis, who scored a season-high 17 points in a 109-89 victory at Detroit on Saturday, said the injury occurred when he took a step and “felt a little pop.”

“I’m going to be in the boot for two weeks just to keep the foot in the right position to heal,” Theis said. “And after the two weeks, I’ll be day-by-day, running, resting.”

MORE CELTICS

Theis readily admits there was a sense of relief when the doctors told him the nature of his injury and the timetable which is significantly shorter than the one he had when he suffered his left knee injury back in March.

“I felt the pop during the game (on Saturday) and after the game I was worried,” Theis said.  “Everybody knows, when something is wrong with your body. That night was tough and the next day when I had the MRI and the doctor told me that it’s just a partial tear … really lucky and that I could be on the court soon. I was really relieved.”

Theis was among the big surprise contributors last season for Boston, appearing in 63 games while averaging 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in just 14.9 minutes per game.

Still on the mend from his knee injury suffered last March, Theis was gradually working his way back into the form that he showed shortly before suffering his season-ending injury against Indiana on March 11.

This season, Theis has averaged six points per game and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 56.5 percent from the field – both improvements upon what he did as a rookie.
