Celtics exec shares cool visualizations of 2019 NBA Draft Lottery odds

If you follow a team involved in Tuesday's NBA Draft Lottery, you've probably seen all sorts of lists and charts projecting where each pick will land.

There are literally hundreds of scenarios, and it all gets pretty confusing. So, how do front offices sort through the mess?

With data visualization, of course.

Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren offered a peek behind the curtain Monday in a 1-on-1 with Celtics.com, sharing two eye-catching charts that make Boston's draft odds slightly easier to digest.

Here's the first chart: A "heat map" of each team's odds to land each pick. The longer the bar graph segment, the more likely that team lands the pick that corresponds to that color.

As you can see, the Celtics have a high probability of getting stuck with the Sacramento Kings' No. 14 pick (in purple), and have just over 40 percent odds of having the Memphis Grizzlies' pick (in light green) fall outside the top 9 and convey to them.

If you're still scratching your head, here's the second chart. This time, the Celtics' odds for each pick are represented by green bar graph segments.

Again, the No. 14 pick is the most likely destined for Boston, although there's a decent chance the C's slide up to No. 10.

There's a lot riding on the ping pong balls: Tuesday could yield the Celtics a top-five pick (a premier asset entering a pivotal offseason) or no picks at all if Sacramento's selection jumps up to No. 1, where it would transfer to the rival Philadelphia 76ers.

But Zarren and the Celtics' front office, armed with their handy-dandy charts, are ready for any and all scenarios.
