Celtics legend Bill Russell received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs on Wednesday night.

The Arthur Ashe award is given to individuals who "possess strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost". Russell, who battled discrimination throughout his career, undoubtedly represents all of these qualities.

Lakers great Kobe Bryant presented Russell with the award.

Boston City Hall was lit green to honor Russell for his incredible achievement.

Russell continues to earn impressive accolades off the court to go along with his 11 NBA championships. The 85-year-old also was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2011.
