Celtics open training camp with more questions than answers

BOSTON — The NBA allows teams to bring a boatload of players to training camp — 20 to be exact.

And the Boston Celtics have every intention of doing that … and then some.

Boston has already committed to more than 20 players to participate in training camp, which means there will be a bit of training camp roster shuffling with some players coming and going for short periods of time.

There are far more questions than answers about this Boston Celtics team, so it only makes sense for them to try and maximize every opportunity to scout and evaluate talent.

Of course the primary focus for training camp will be on strengthening the connectivity and chemistry of the players on the main roster.

But it will also afford Boston a chance to look closer at some prospects to consider for the still-vacant 15th roster spot in addition to potential players to add to their pipeline of G-League talent.

The Celtics have signed Max Strus and Tremont Waters to fill their pair of two-way contract signings. Both players are expected to spend most of the season with the Maine Red Claws, but they can be called up and be on the Celtics roster for up to 45 days.

Boston has also taken advantage of the Exhibit 10 contract option, having signed 7-foot-7 Tacko Fall as well as reportedly agreeing to terms on an Exhibit 10 contract with former Miami Heat forward Yante Maten.

After a strong showing with the Celtics' summer league team, Boston also added Javonte Green, who will be competing for the 15th roster spot and could potentially wind up signing with the Red Claws as well.

But of greater concern will be how Kemba Walker meshes with his new teammates, as well as the growth of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

And don't forget about Gordon Hayward, who has drawn rave reviews from his teammates and the coaches who have monitored his play this summer.

His ability to return to the All-Star form he displayed shortly before arriving in Boston, would go far in changing the calculus many have for the Celtics and their chances at success this season.

There are a number of potential paths towards success for Boston.

What we will see more than anything else in training camp, is the Celtics trying to maximize their options heading into this season, one that begins with a lot more questions than answers that they hope will start to reveal themselves beginning with training camp this week.
