Celtics roster reset: How Kemba Walker, Terry Rozier moves impact Boston's lineup

Share

The Boston Celtics' 2019-20 roster is starting to take shape with NBA free agency just a few hours old.

The C's reportedly have found their Kyrie Irving replacement by agreeing to a four-year, $141 million contract with Charlotte Hornets star Kemba Walker. Walker will become Boston's new starting point guard, primary ball-handler and No. 1 scoring option. The Celtics' backup point guard, Terry Rozier, reportedly is headed to the Hornets on a three-year, $58 million deal.

Al Horford also is not returning to Boston. After spending the last three seasons with the Celtics, the 33-year-old forward reportedly has agreed to a four-year, $109 million pact with the rival Philadelphia 76ers.

The Celtics' most glaring weakness is in the frontcourt.

Horford is taking his talents to Philly, Aron Baynes reportedly will be traded to the Phoenix Suns as part of a draft-night deal, and Marcus Morris figures to sign a contract too rich for Boston to compete with. All of this leaves Boston with a mostly young, inexperienced group of power forwards and centers. It's entirely possible, at least right now, that Robert Williams or rookie Grant Williams could fill a starting role to begin next season. The C's also could target veteran centers on the free-agent market, but many of them already have agreed to deals with rival teams.

UPDATE (Monday, July 1 at 3:25 p.m. ET): The Celtics reportedly have agreed to sign veteran center Enes Kanter to a two-year, $10 million contract.
