The Boston Celtics didn't make any noise at the 2020 NBA trade deadline, but they could still look to make a move via the buyout market.
That's where they may find old friend Isaiah Thomas, who reportedly will be bought out by the Los Angeles Clippers after being traded by the Washington Wizards on Thursday.
The former Celtics guard is one of several potential buyout candidates who could appeal to Boston, but would he be a good fit on this year's squad? A. Sherrod Blakely and Chris Forsberg discussed on the latest episode of the Celtics Talk Podcast.
Blakely believes Thomas would have trouble adjusting to a new role with the Celtics, three years removed from being the star in Boston.
I think that the challenge that he would have in coming back to Boston is accepting a different role than he's used to. He's not going to be 20-25 minute a game I.T., even on a good day. He's going to be more like Brad Wanamaker minutes where you come in, make a few shots, play 10-15 minutes, you go home, the team wins by seven. That's your job.
I think he is at that point now where he knows it's either play for a bad team and put up numbers that people aren't going to buy, or play for a good team, put up so-so numbers, but at least you're impacting winning.
Forsberg simply doesn't see Thomas fitting in with the C's at this point in his career.
Love I.T., was really excited for the potential that he would go and compete for a championship, I don't think it's a fit for Boston. Like, he's just not the same player. I don't think he fits what they need. I mean, he's not going to rekindle his 3-point shooting. He's not a spot-up kind of guy, he needs the ball in his hands.
