Do C's need a roster shakeup after embarrassing loss to Wizards?

Share

Well, that was embarrassing.

Two days after losing to the bottom-dwelling Pistons, the Boston Celtics suffered a double-digit defeat to the only team below Detroit in the Eastern Conference standings: the Washington Wizards.

Bradley Beal (35 points, seven rebounds, five assists) played a big role in handing Boston a 104-91 defeat Sunday at Capital One Arena, but many of the Celtics' wounds were self-inflicted, as they committed 17 turnovers and shot 25.7% from 3-point range.

There's plenty to discuss from this eye-opening loss, so let's get into our three overreactions from Sunday's game.

1. It's time for Danny Ainge to shake up this roster.

You can make all the excuses you want: The Celtics are down Marcus Smart. They've rarely had a fully-healthy roster this season. This was their third game in four days. But after back-to-back losses to the two worst teams in the East, it's clear this team needs some sort of boost.

Celtics basketball operations Danny Ainge has admitted he's in search of "shooting with size" ahead of the March 25 NBA trade deadline. Even if Ainge can't find that type of player, he should consider adding a veteran scorer who can take some of the scoring burden off Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who have shown signs of fatigue after carrying the C's on offense.

Boston is just 4.5 games back in the East, and there's plenty of time to turn things around. But this team looks like it needs a serious wake-up call after Sunday's lackluster effort. What better wake-up call than a roster shakeup?

Verdict: Slight overreaction

2. Kemba Walker is officially back.

If there's one positive to take away from Sunday's game, it's the play of Walker.

The veteran point guard tied Jaylen Brown as the Celtics' leading scorer in Washington, dropping 25 points on 9 for 18 shooting while going 4 for 7 from 3-point range. More importantly, Walker flashed improved explosiveness and scored eight of those 25 points in the paint.

Walker has struggled to find his offensive groove all season, but after scoring 46 points in his last two games on 14 of 30 shooting, it appears he may be turning a corner.

We'll need a bigger sample size to declare Walker officially back, but his improved play is a good sign for Celtics fans.

Verdict: Overreaction

3. Semi Ojeleye's time as a Celtics starter is running out.

Ojeleye is enjoying a career season in the scoring department and made the most of his recent promotion to the starting lineup, scoring 33 points over a two-game span.

The fourth-year wing came back down to earth Sunday, though, making just one of his six shot attempts (all 3-pointers) and finishing with a team-worst minus-29 rating.

Ojeleye can provide excellent defense and knock down a few 3-pointers to give the second unit a spark. But Sunday's game reminded us that he probably shouldn't be a regular NBA starter. Expect Ojeleye to return to the bench when Marcus Smart returns from his calf injury, if not sooner.

Verdict: Not an overreaction
