Ex-Celtics star Rajon Rondo achieves rare feat by winning title with Lakers

Rajon Rondo is a champion again, and he's made history in the process.

The veteran point guard won his second championship Sunday night when the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the 2020 NBA Finals.

Rondo, who just completed his second season with the Lakers, began his career with the Boston Celtics. The C's acquired him via trade on draft night in 2006, and he started on Boston's championship-winning team in 2008 when it defeated the Lakers. Rondo played for the Celtics until he was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2014-15 season.

The list of players who've won a title with both of the league's marquee franchises and greatest rivals is very short. In fact, Rondo just became only the second player to accomplish the feat.

Clyde Lovellette won a championship with the Minneapolis Lakers in the 1953-54 season. He joined the Celtics for the final two seasons of his career in 1962-63 and 1963-64. Boston won the title in both of those years as part of a record eight consecutive championships from 1959 through 1966.

Rondo is technically the first player to win a title with the Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. Lovellette's career with the Lakers came before the franchise moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles after the 1959-60 season.

Either way, it's a very impressive accomplishment for Rondo. He played a key role off the bench for the Lakers in their 2020 playoff run, averaging 8.9 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.
