Hornets-Celtics Takeaways: Jayson Tatum leads the way, C's extend winning streak

BOSTON -- Jayson Tatum has never shied away from having high goals for himself.

And it’s performances like the one he put on Sunday night that only fuel those expectations with Tatum leading a strong Celtics surge in the second half to pull away from the Charlotte Hornets for a 119-93 win.

Tatum led all scorers with a career-high 39 points on 15-for-29 shooting to go with 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season.

Boston (20-7) has now won three in a row after dropping back-to-back games to Indiana and Philadelphia, respectively.

And the blueprint for Boston’s win on Sunday was a mix of balanced scoring, strong bench play and balanced scoring from the team’s Big Three of Tatum, Kemba Walker (23 points) and Jaylen Brown (16 points).

Here are some other key takeaways from Sunday’s win.

KEMBA WALKER

Not that there was any reason to be worried, but it was nice to see Kemba Walker bounce back from his worst game of the season - and one of the worst of his career - with a strong showing.

After missing every shot from the floor against Detroit (that was only the second time that happened in his NBA career), Walker came back with 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting against the Hornets along with dishing out four assists.

Walker is Boston’s best scorer, without question. But it’s good to see the team find ways to win when he’s not on top of his game scoring the ball, and him come back and get back into a good scoring rhythm without necessarily being a ball-chucker in the process.

ROMEO LANGFORD

The more time he gets, it becomes more apparent why the Boston Celtics were so high on him coming into the NBA draft. He has the kind of versatility at 6-foot-6 that provides the kind of depth that Boston is looking for in a key reserve.

He delivered at both ends of the floor on Sunday before finishing with a career-high eight points on 3-for-6 shooting to go with four rebounds.

GRANT WILLIAMS

It says a lot about the Celtics when you look at the fact that one of their better performers of late has been Grant Williams. He was solid as ever on Sunday, finishing with 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting to go with four rebounds.

Williams is slowly but surely showing that there’s more to his game than many thought prior to him entering the NBA.

Yes, he’s one of the stronger players on the Celtics roster but as we’re seeing more of lately, he can do so many more things.

The 3-point shot is indeed a weapon he’s utilizing well. And when teams try and take that away, he’s attacking the paint off the dribble and finishing in the paint.

Having that kind of versatility was key for his strong performance against the Hornets, and it’ll be part of his success going forward.
