Anthony Davis has officially requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans, and that will crank the NBA rumor mill into high gear.

We have seen a high amount of NBA superstars traded in recent seasons, and the results for the teams trading away the best player in the deal are pretty mixed. A lot of these trades hinge on what the draft picks involved ultimately produce.

Let's take a look back at recent NBA superstar trades so we can better understand what type of haul the Pelicans could receive in exchange for Davis.

The desperate Pistons swung a huge trade to land Griffin but missed the playoffs. The Clippers, meanwhile, are getting a fantastic 2018-19 season from Harris and the first-rounder turned into Kentucky point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been among the most promising rookies. Griffin has played well for the Pistons, but they are no closer to being a legitimate contender than they were before this trade.

Kings receive: Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway, 2017 first-round and second-round picks from New Orleans

Cousins was great for New Orleans, but a torn Achilles injury ended his season early and the Pelicans were without his services come playoff time. Cousins ultimately left New Orleans and signed with the Golden State Warriors in free agency. The Kings' best piece from this deal is Buddy Hield, who's turned into a very good shooter and an important player for Sacramento.

Timberwolves receive: Jimmy Butler, 2017 first-round pick from Chicago
Bulls receive: Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, 2017 first-round pick from Minnesota

The Bulls came out the winners of this trade. LaVine has been a very good scorer for them, and the draft pick (No. 7 overall) turned into Lauri Markkanen, who's a franchise building block for Chicago. The T-Wolves made the playoffs in their first year with Butler but he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this season after a very public feud with the front office and teammates.

Thunder receive: Paul George
Pacers receive: Victor Oladipo, Domantas Sabonis

Nearly everyone criticized the Pacers for getting fleeced when this trade happened. However, both teams have made out quite well with this deal. The Thunder are one of the best teams in the Western Conference and George is an All-Star starter this season. Oladipo, before his recent season-ending injury, was the most improved player in the league since the trade was made, and Sabonis is having a fantastic 2018-19 campaign.

Cavs receive: Kevin Love

This trade gave the Cavs a "Big Three" of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Love. This trio went on to reach three consecutive NBA Finals, including a thrilling seven-game series win over the Golden State Warriors in 2016. The T-Wolves still have Wiggins, but he's on one of the worst contracts in the league and has failed to live up to his pre-draft hype.

Timberwolves receive: Robert Covington, Dario Saric, Jerryd Bayless, 2022 second-round pick from 76ers

The 76ers have won a lot of games with Butler, but he has created distractions similar to the way he did in Minnesota. He is an unrestricted free agent after this season, so it'll be interesting to see what happens to him the rest of the season. Would the 76ers trade him before the February deadline?

This trade was a disaster for the Cavs. Sure, they still got to the NBA Finals by beating a Celtics team that was without Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward because of injuries, but none of the players acquired in this trade helped them get to June. Crowder and Thomas didn't even finish the season in Cleveland. Both of them were dealt before the trade deadline. Cleveland used the Nets pick to select point guard Collin Sexton No. 8 overall, and he has not lived up to his potential so far.
