If NBA season resumes after coronavirus outbreak, players will need weeks to train

Unfortunately, there is no timetable for the NBA season to resume in 2020.

While the league continues to search for a viable option to continue playing games this season, don't expect things to return to normal. It's possible games will resume in empty arenas, but that's not the biggest issue with a return to basketball.

Many players have been unable to even touch a basketball with the season on hold and they're going to need some time to tune up when play resumes.

"One of the big talking points I have with players now is how long it would take them to get back in shape if the season resumes," Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix told Brian Scalabrine. "I don't think that's getting enough attention when it comes to the idea of will NBA be played again."

A majority of players Mannixs talked to have said they'll need roughly a month to get back in shape, but Scalabrine is confused as to why they'll need so much time when they only have about one week of preseason training.

"It's because... yes, technically preseason is only a week, week and a half, whatever you want to call it, but leading up to that guys are playing," Mannix told Scalabrine. "It goes back to having a mini-training camp in Las Vegas and summertime workouts for months... these guys are doing nothing, they're doing what you and I are doing, Scal. They're having Zoom workouts together, they're doing online videos. That's not how you stay in shape to play professional basketball."

While some players have home gyms and are able to work out, it doesn't come close to simulating what game action feels like. It only makes sense for some sort of training camp to happen before the season gets underway again.

Considering how much a resumption of the season will impact playoff chances, it seems like an extended training period is more likely to happen.
