The NBA's new sneaker rule allows players to express themselves and rock the most creative of kicks.

For Jaylen Brown, it allows him to do something much more special.

Trevin Steede befriended Brown after Brown transferred to Wheeler High in Marietta, Georgia. They were teammates on Wheeler's basketball team.

Brown posted more pictures of the shoes on Instagram:

Less than 24 hours after the death of Brown's best friend, he scored 22 points and led the Celtics to a victory over Golden State.

A month before Steede's passing, he starred in a video that went viral of him playing one-on-one with Brown.

Steede's death was ruled a suicide. He was 22.
