Latest Markelle Fultz trade calls for updated review of Celtics-76ers deal

The Markelle Fultz era for the Philadelphia 76ers, at long last, has come to an end.

The 76ers dealt the 2017 No. 1 overall draft pick to the Orlando Magic just before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET NBA trade deadline for an underwhelming package. It marks an end to a very disappointing tenure in Philadelphia for Fultz, one marred by injuries.

Fultz's arrival in Philly was a result of one of the most controversial trades in recent memory, a deal that would change the course of two fierce rivals, the 76ers and the Boston Celtics.

Here's a timeline of that blockbuster trade between the Celtics and 76ers.

June 19, 2017: Celtics trade the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft to the 76ers for the No. 3 pick and a future first-round pick.

June 22, 2017: Celtics select Duke forward Jayson Tatum with the No. 3 pick, while the Sixers take Washington guard Markelle Fultz at No. 1 overall.

May 15, 2018: 76ers keep their 2018 Los Angeles Lakers' first-round pick because it did not fall within Nos. 2-6 (if it had, the pick would've gone to Boston). As a result, the Sixers will give the Celtics the Sacramento Kings' 2019 first-rounder (top-1 protected) to complete the Fultz trade.

Feb. 7, 2019: Sixers trade Fultz to the Orlando Magic for guard Jonathon Simmons, a second-round draft pick and a protected 2020 first-round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

So, to recap, here are the results of the Celtics-76ers trade as of Thursday:

BOSTON: Jayson Tatum, 2019 Sacramento Kings first-round pick (top-1 protected)
PHILADELPHIA: Jonathon Simmons, protected 2020 first-round pick via OKC, second-round draft pick

The 76ers have a really good team, and perhaps the best starting lineup in the league with Joel Embiid, Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris and J.J. Redick. But they wasted valuable draft assets for a player they didn't need, and in the process, it has helped one of their top rivals in the Eastern Conference build a roster that could dominate the league in the coming years.

"The Process" worked for the 76ers, there's no debate there. However, it also produced some pretty bad misses, and Fultz might be atop that list.
