CHAPEL HILL, NC — The Boston Celtics will open their preseason slate of games tonight against Charlotte minus Marcus Smart.
Team officials said the 6-foot-4 guard isn’t with the team for “personal reasons.”
Smart, who signed a four-year, $52 million contract with Boston during the offseason, is still in the grieving process following the death of his mother Camilla Smart shortly before training camp started.
Smart was with the team when camp opened, but his mother’s death was clearly something he was still coming to terms with.
Boston plays Charlotte tonight at the Dean Smith Center on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
