Report: Celtics assistant and HC candidate joining Pistons staff

The Boston Celtics have another opening on their coaching staff, while a candidate for their head coach job is off the market.

The Pistons are finalizing deals with Celtics assistant coach Jerome Allen and two other assistants to join head coach Dwane Casey's staff in Detroit, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Tuesday.

Allen, who has worked with the Celtics since 2015, was one of several internal candidates Boston interviewed as potential replacements for Brad Stevens after he took over as president of basketball operations. Allen also was expected to interview for the Portland Trail Blazers' head coach vacancy, but it appears he'll continue working as an assistant.

Forsberg: These rising-star assistants should be on Celtics' radar

Allen's departure leaves Jay Larranaga, Scott Morrison, Brandon Bailey, Jamie Young and Joe Mazzulla as Boston's assistant coaches. While those assistants have interviewed for the Celtics' head coach job, Boston reportedly is turning its attention to external candidates by reaching out to several NBA assistants, including Chauncey Billups, Darvin Ham, Charles Lee, Jamahl Mosley and Ime Udoka.

The Blazers, Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic have head coach openings as well, so who follows Stevens in Boston is still anyone's guess.
