Jaylen Brown has been a popular name in the early debate over the Most Improved Player Award after his hot start to the 2020-21 NBA season, but should we be thinking of the Boston Celtics star as a candidate for a more prestigious honor?
One NBA legend thinks so.
Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson tweeted his top five MVP candidates Wednesday night, and Brown was among them.
Brown has played at -- or pretty close -- to an MVP level throughout the season so far. He's averaging career highs with 25.8 points, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while also shooting a career-best 51.8 percent from the field. He's converting on 39.5 percent of his 3-point attempts and is pulling down 5.8 rebounds per game.
Brown led the Celtics with 26 points in Wednesday night's loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 24-year-old guard has carried the Celtics offense while the team has been without some of its best players, including All-Star point guard Kemba Walker missing the first 11 games of the season and Jayson Tatum missing the last three.
Brown probably won't win the MVP award, especially with Tatum and Walker likely making a huge impact on the team's success when they are both back in the lineup together. But there's no question Brown deserves to be an All-Star this season and receive strong consideration for the MIP award.
