NBA Rumors: Celtics interviewed J.B. Bickerstaff for assistant coach opening

The Boston Celtics have a vacancy to fill on their coaching staff, and it appears they have a candidate in a former NBA head coach.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens interviewed J.B. Bickerstaff on Wednesday night at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, Marc Berman of the New York Post reported Thursday.

Bickerstaff would replace C's assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry, who left the team earlier this month to become an assistant coach at Purdue.

Bickerstaff has 15 years' experience as an NBA assistant coach with four teams: the Charlotte Bobcats, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies. The 40-year-old served as interim coach in Houston and Memphis and was the Grizzlies' permanent head coach this past season before the team fired him on April 11.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly both interviewed Bickerstaff for their head coach openings before hiring Frank Vogel and John Beilein, respectively, so the longtime NBA assistant appears to be well-regarded in league circles.
