NBA rumors: Jimmy Butler sign-and-trade between 76ers, Heat in trouble?

The Philadelphia 76ers were very busy in the opening hours of NBA free agency Sunday, but there's still more work for them to complete a Jimmy Butler sign-and-trade with the Miami Heat.

The Heat reportedly have agreed to trade Josh Richardson to the 76ers in exchange for Butler, who will receive a four-year, $142 million max contract from Miami. The Heat need to dump salary by bringing a third team into the trade, and late Sunday night it appeared the Dallas Mavericks were going to acquire Goran Dragic to make the math work.

Well, Dallas is no longer part of the trade, per the New York Times' Marc Stein, and now Miami must find a new partner to ensure the deal is completed.

Trades cannot become official until July 6, so the Heat do have some time to figure out an alternative. However, other free-agent decisions could impact which teams the Heat can call and offer Dragic.

One of the other notable moves made by 76ers on Sunday was agreeing to sign veteran forward Al Horford to a four-year, $109 million deal. Salary cap guru Keith Smith tweeted early Monday morning that even if this Butler sign-and-trade fails, Philadelphia will still be able to land Horford.
