Could the Banana Boat's next stop be Los Angeles?
After his Rockets career went down in flames in 10 disastrous games earlier this season, Carmelo Anthony is a man without a team... but if LeBron James gets his wish, Melo could land with the Lakers.
"James and his camp still believe Anthony can play, that there could be a place for him as a contributor on a Lakers’ team that is young and continues to battle injuries," according to the report in The Athletic.
Evidence that Melo can still play was hard to come by in Houston, where he averaged a career-worst 13.4 points per game to start this season as Houston stumbled to a 4-6 record. The Rockets then decided to cut bait with the 10-time All-Star, even though he had signed a league-minimum contract of just $2.4 million for this season.
There had been speculation that Kyrie Irving was alluding to Anthony, a 16-year NBA veteran, when he said the Celtics could use a 14- or 15-year vet on the roster, but C's fans would probably much rather see him in Los Angeles than Boston -- if only out of sheer morbid curiosity.
Either way, Melo can't be traded until December 15, and James reportedly hasn't made any formal requests for the Lakers to add the 34-year-old, at least not yet. But it's still a situation that bears watching if Anthony remains unemployed as the season continues.
