Report: Purdue star set to play for Celtics' Summer League team

The Boston Celtics selected just one player in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft, but JD Davison will have company in Las Vegas this summer.

Purdue big man Trevion Williams will play for the Celtics in NBA Summer League beginning July 9, ESPN's Jonathan Givony reported Friday.

The 6-foot-10, 265-pound Chicago native averaged 12.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game last season, earning Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year honors after coming off the bench for the Boilermakers as a senior. Williams was First-Team All-Big Ten as a junior and actually declared for the 2021 NBA Draft before withdrawing and returning to Purdue for one more season.

Williams is considered one of the best players who went undrafted Thursday night, and his passing ability should intrigue Celtics fans. While it's rare for undrafted players to make an impact at the NBA level, there is some recent precedent: Austin Reaves (Los Angeles Lakers) and Jose Alvarado (New Orleans Pelicans) both carved out roles as rookies after going undrafted, and Fred VanVleet just made an All-Star team despite being undrafted.

The 21-year-old Williams will get the chance to prove himself for Boston's Summer League squad, which will also feature second-round pick JD Davison and international prospects Yam Madar and Juhann Begarin.
