The Celtics reportedly are not confident they will re-sign Kyrie Irving.

Considering the Kyrie-to-Nets rumors that have been flying around, that doesn't come as much of a surprise. Reports have indicated Irving and the Nets share "intense" mutual interest. But could the 27-year-old guard change his mind if Boston finds a way to land Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis in a trade? The C's believe there's a chance, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe.

Himmelsbach writes:

According to league sources, the Celtics’ belief that Irving will re-sign with them after free agency opens on June 30 has eroded.

There is still some hope within the organization that Irving will have a change of heart if Boston is able to acquire Davis. And Irving’s fickle personality certainly makes anything possible until he officially agrees to terms with some team.

But the likelihood of an Irving return appears to be decreasing. Nevertheless, the sources said, it is clear that the Celtics’ pursuit of Davis will push forward.

Obviously, pairing Irving with Davis seems like a pipe dream at this point as Davis has no interest in a long-term commitment with Boston according to his agent, Rich Paul.

But if the Celtics do manage to land AD in a mega-deal, that makes Irving's free agency decision infinitely more difficult. In what could be a wide open NBA next season, the C's would have a serious shot at a title with him and Davis leading the charge.

Fortunately, we won't need to wait much longer to find out what that decision will be. NBA free agency opens just over two weeks from now on June 30.
