FOXBORO -- Marcus Cannon has turned his career around, and for that he's been rewarded.

According to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, Cannon received a $7 million signing bonus when he put pen to paper on his new five-year contract that is worth $32.5 million, including $14.5 million guaranteed.

"Marcus is having a good season," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said on Wednesday. "He's been a good player for us. He's had to fill in for Sebastian [Vollmer] and Nate [Solder] in previous years. We felt like we had three good tackles, ended up playing two, however it went. It varied from year to year over the last few years.

"Marcus has always done a solid job for us whenever he's played. I'm glad we have him going forward. He works hard. Quiet kid, but he's dependable. Team-oriented. He's done a good job for us in the running game and the passing game. Been a good player."

Cannon's benefitted from losing weight this offseason and playing with better technique with the help of offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia. Cannon's also been slotted in as the team's starting right tackle since the start of the season, providing him with some continuity in terms of understanding his role -- a change from when he backed up Solder and Vollmer at tackle and even played some guard earlier in his career.

According to Pro Football Focus, Cannon is the No. 13 ranked tackle in the league among players who've played at least 75 percent of their team's snaps. He's the No. 4 pass-blocker in that group and the No. 17 run-blocker, per PFF.
