Belichick makes surprise address at NCAA lacrosse banquet

Belichick makes surprise address at NCAA lacrosse banquet

It's been well-established that Bill Belichick has a strong affinity for the sport of lacrosse. That the NCAA Division I men's and women's lacrosse Final Fours are taking place at Gillette Stadium this weekend means that the Patriots head coach has an opportunity to be around the highest level of college competition the sport has to offer.

And he's taking full advantage.

Not only did he meet with and speak to the Boston College women's team on Thursday, he's also met with the Ohio State men's team, and he took a few minutes to speak to all eight finalists at the Division I lacrosse banquet on Thursday night before the weekend of play got underway.

"I know that for us, fortunately, we've been to a lot of these games, and we've come out on the good side on some and not on the good side on others," Belichick said. "But just the experience, the competition of playing at this level and playing against this type of competition for what's at stake this weekend, it's just an awesome experience for you and your families."

Belichick explained that he had seen all eight teams play at one point or another this year, and he sounded like a fan of them all as he closed his remarks.

"It's really exciting to watch," he said. "You guys play with a lot of class, a lot of heart, a lot of toughness, and that's what I admire. Hopefully, we can play like that this coming year."

Tom Brady shuts down random Twitter user questioning his Madden rating

Twitter trolls, beware: Tom Brady reads the comments.

EA Sports published its player ratings for "Madden NFL 20" on Monday and gave the New England Patriots quarterback a 96 overall, second among all QBs behind Patrick Mahomes.

Some random guy on Twitter disagreed with this assessment, escalating his hot take to the point of declaring he could run faster than Brady.

Why do we care what "Matt Harrington" thinks of Brady's athleticism? We don't ... but the Patriots QB apparently does.

Here's Brady coming out of left field to put "Matt Harrington" in his place:

Game over, Matt.

Brady obviously is slow by NFL standards but recently ran a 40-yard dash in 5.17 seconds, which is faster than the glacial 5.28-second dash he ran at the 2000 NFL Combine.

It's also faster than the random Twitter troll can probably run, as this guy found out the hard way.

Jonas Gray to the XFL? Ex-Patriots running back attends showcase

Jonas Gray to the XFL? Ex-Patriots running back attends showcase

The ultimate "one-hit wonder" in New England is intent on keeping his football career alive.

Former Patriots running back Jonas Gray joined a handful of NFL castoffs who participated in an XFL "Summer Showcase" workout this weekend in St. Louis.

Among those joining Gray for the new league's workout session were former No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson, ex-Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger and tight end Clay Harbor, who played for the Patriots for part of 2016.

Gray latched on with the Patriots in 2014 and burst onto the scene in November, rushing for 201 yards and four touchdowns in a win over the Indianapolis Colts.

But the Notre Dame product fizzled out as fast as he arrived, tallying just 91 more total yards after that breakout game and getting released by New England the following September.

Gray, 29, hasn't played an NFL snap since 2015, but apparently has his sights set on the XFL, which is set to relaunch in 2020 after a failed first attempt in 2001.
