Phil Perry's incredibly premature Patriots 53-man roster projection

There's almost four months that have to come off the calendar before the Patriots are are forced to settle on a 53-man roster. You don't need me to tell you that a lot can happen in four months.

In the spring, the 90 players on the team right will focus on getting into shape and digesting the system. Rookies will have a little extra on their plates as they learn how to adapt to their new lives as professionals. Come summertime, competitions will be won and lost in training camp. Injuries will happen. Players will be added. Players will be cut.

When you take all of those things into account, it's impossible to predict who will be on the active roster come Week 1. Still, taking a far-too-early look at some of the expected competitions gives us an opportunity to examine how certain position groups are constructed. It also allows us to think about where some of the tightest roster-spot battles will be waged before the Patriots head to Arizona for their first regular-season game.
