Flowers sits out preseason game with Texans, says he feels healthy

HOUSTON -- Trey Flowers did not play in Saturday night's game against the Texans despite feeling fine physically, he said after the game, indicating it was a coach's decision to keep him sidelined.

Flowers is the top defensive end on the Patriots roster, and it would make sense that the team would want to keep him fresh for the long haul given where they are in terms of their numbers at that position. Rookies Derek Rivers (knee) and Deatrich Wise (head) are both dealing with injuries. Linebacker Shea McClellin, who has the ability to play on the edge, has missed about two weeks of work with an undisclosed ailment.

Flowers appeared to finish both joint practices against the Texans at the Greenbrier in West Virginia without incident.

Patriots defensive lineman Geneo Grissom was also held out of New England's second preseason game, though it's unclear as to why. Among those seeing time on the edge against the Texans were Kony Ealy, Caleb Kidder, Harvey Langi and Kyle Van Noy.
