The New England Revolution's first crack at solving Nashville SC's defense proved unsuccessful.

The Revs battled Nashville SC to a 0-0 draw Saturday night at Gillette Stadium in their first meeting against the MLS expansion club.

New England outshot Nashville 17-3 on the night and had a majority of the offensive chances, but Nashville's defense held firm behind goalkeeper Joe Willis, who made five saves.

Second-year winger Tajon Buchanan had an encouraging game for the Revs, taking a career-high seven shots that included New England's best chance of the night: a rocket from long range that Willis tipped over the goal bar in the eighth minute.

Nashville remained in a conservative, defensive formation much of the night, allowing the Revs to carry play but denying them a goal.

"I think it’s a common denominator how teams play us in Gillette," head coach Bruce Arena said after the game. "They drop off, they play in a low block, and they make it difficult. And technically, we were not good enough tonight."

The Revs sit sixth in the MLS standings with 22 points (5-3-7), while Nashville SC moves into a three-way tie at the bottom of the standings with 17 points.

New England faces a tough challenge Wednesday in Toronto FC, so its offense will need to step up in that contest.
