The New England Revolution were on the verge of celebrating a berth in the 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, but they simply couldn't finish the job on Wednesday night.

The Revs just needed at least a draw with the New York Red Bulls in order to clinch a playoff spot. They battled to a scoreless draw up until the 89th minute, when they allowed a goal to Red Bulls defender Aaron Long.

New England couldn't answer in stoppage time and fell by a score of 1-0. It can still make its way into the playoffs if Inter Miami CF ties or loses to FC Dallas on Wednesday night.

On the bright side, it was a special night for Diego Fagundez. The Revs midfielder tied the club record for regular-season appearances (261) at only 25 years old.

The Revs now are 7-6-8 (29 points) with two regular-season matches left on the schedule. Next up is a Sunday night matchup vs. D.C. United, which is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET. You catch the game right here on NBC Sports Boston.
